Please note that we are asking for a copy of baptismal certificates for all children in our program this year (unless we received them from you this past year). With all the mergers and reorganizations, we do not have access to sacramental records from our pre-merged parishes. Records can be sent to [email protected].
If you do not have a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate at home, please contact Diocesan Archives for another copy. Here is more information: Sacramental Record Request | Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh | Pittsburgh, PA (diopitt.org).

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd: Level I & Level II Atrium
This is a Montessori-based faith formation program that seeks to foster independence and confidence in the child, as well as the capacity to actively listen and respond to God. Beginning with the youngest children, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd happens in a specially-prepared space called an “atrium.” An atrium is less a classroom and more of a sacred space or even laboratory. In the atrium, the child becomes exposed to Scripture, articles and prayers of the Mass, and the rhythm of the liturgical year. A typical atrium session includes an age-appropriate presentation, manipulable materials for the child to “work” with, space and time for the child’s work choice, as well as space for the child’s reflection and prayer.
Level I Atrium
Created for 3-6 year olds (preschool and kindergartners), the Level I atrium is a space for young children to encounter the most vital and essential aspects of our faith. From dioramas on the parables, to vestments made with the liturgical year’s colors, to a miniature baptismal font and more, young children come to know God’s special love for them and become empowered to respond with authenticity and enthusiasm.
Level II Atrium
In the Level II atrium space, first, second, third and fourth graders expand on the love relationship they began to build in earlier atrium years, focusing now on how to respond to God’s love. They begin to think about how to make good choices and live well. In this atrium, we begin to emphasize the moral parables and the Sermon on the Mount, exploring how loving well has so much to do with making loving choices. At the same time, mirroring Montessori curriculum on the vastness of the cosmos, these are the years we introduce salvation history. We explore with the children the stories of creation, redemption and Parousia (“when God will be all in all!”), learning how to make our own mindful contributions to that story.
Virtual First, Second, Third and Fourth Grades
For those who cannot make it to us in person, we offer virtual options for first, second, third and fourth grade. These groups use Pflaum Gospel Weeklies, a curriculum that introduces the teachings of our faith through the lens of the Gospel for the week. The Gospel Weeklies help us learn Church teaching through the lens of the teachings of Christ, our primary Teacher, as well as through the rhythm of the liturgical year. The curriculum looks at current events and events in children’s lives to help make connections from the Gospel to a lived, dynamic faith.
Tween/Teen Ministry
Tween/Teen Ministry is a space for fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth graders to come together to form community, ask the hard questions, encounter Christ in the Scriptures, and explore meaningful prayer. Each session begins with the group making a meal together and then sharing that meal with some Gospel reflection. The day’s lesson is tied in with small group conversation and unique prayer experiences. Part small group, part youth group, part catechesis. Space to grow as a disciple in community.
Confirmation Prep
After eight plus years of catechesis/learning the teachings of the faith, Confirmation Prep is an opportunity for prayer, discernment and exploration. It’s less a time to learn more information, and more a time to take a deep dive into what that information means for your life. It’s space to explore committing to a life of discipleship. Sessions include meaningful small group conversation, art, literature and film that helps us see our faith through different perspectives, and time to explore service. It’s an invitation to be real and make intentional choices as an adult in the faith. Intended for ninth grade and up.
